Revealing New Zealand's Premier Price Comparison Apps: A Comprehensive Evaluation of PriceGrabber, Grocer, and PriceSpy!

19/12/2023

With the escalating cost of living in New Zealand, a growing cohort of software developers is directing their efforts toward crafting price comparison applications designed to assist New Zealand consumers in navigating the economic landscape. These applications aim to empower users by helping them find the best deals on various products, ultimately mitigating the impact of inflation on the day-to-day expenses of ordinary households.

This article undertakes a comparative analysis of three prominent product comparison applications in New Zealand—PriceGrabber, Grocer, and PriceSpy—from the standpoint of an ordinary user. The objective is to assess the advantages and disadvantages of each platform, aiding users in making informed decisions when seeking cost-effective solutions in the face of rising living costs.

Product Quantity

PriceSpy claims to compare prices for over 1.7 million products, providing information, reviews, and ratings across various categories. However, it lacks information on grocery items from major New Zealand supermarkets like Countdown, New World, and Pak’nSave.

Grocer, on the other hand, specifically focuses on displaying prices for every item in these nationwide supermarket branches, serving as a complementary product to PriceSpy in terms of store and product quantity.

PriceGrabber stands out by covering over 3 million products, not only comparing prices at Countdown, New World, and Pak ‘n Save branches but also offering information on products from all major retailers in New Zealand. This broader coverage allows users to frequently find discounted items from various mainstream stores, often with substantial savings. In this aspect, PriceGrabber surpasses both Grocer and PriceSpy in terms of product quantity.

In conclusion, after a thorough comparison, PriceGrabber emerges as the winner due to its extensive coverage, encompassing a wide range of products and offering the potential for substantial savings.

Price Accuracy

As a price comparison software, the accuracy of product prices is crucial. According to the information available to the author at the time of writing, both PriceGrabber and Grocer declare on their websites that they update their product prices daily, while PriceSpy does not provide any such information. To test the accuracy of the prices displayed, the author specifically chose the product Microsoft Xbox Series S 512GB 2020 and compared its prices on PriceSpy and PriceGrabber.

The results, as of December 19, 2023, revealed that the product was on sale at The Warehouse. Unfortunately, PriceSpy did not capture the latest data, while PriceGrabber displayed accurate pricing information. From this observation, it can be inferred that PriceGrabber has a higher frequency of product price updates compared to PriceSpy.

Due to the inherent limitations in Grocer’s design, it can only display the price range of selected products in specified stores. It lacks a direct link to merchant pages, and Grocer does not include information on Xbox products. Consequently, it is challenging to assess the real-time accuracy of product prices using Grocer. In this regard, PriceGrabber excels in both product diversity and accuracy compared to the other two apps.

User Experience

1.User Interface

The three screenshots provided showcase the homepages of the respective websites, captured by the author using a computer. A notable observation is that Grocer’s user interface appears relatively simple but lacks support for responsive cross-platform user experiences. On the other hand, PriceSpy and PriceGrabber feature more contemporary page designs.

However, it’s worth noting that PriceSpy incorporates numerous sidebar and popup ads, which undeniably have a negative impact on the overall user experience. In contrast, PriceGrabber stands out as excelling in user interface design, providing a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. In summary, the author contends that PriceGrabber surpasses the others in terms of user interface design.

2.Operational Experience

In addition to an aesthetically pleasing user interface, smooth operational experiences are crucial for an app. This article conducts practical tests in the context of daily grocery shopping, evaluating Grocer and PriceGrabber. Since PriceSpy does not support grocery product comparisons, it is not included in this round of evaluation.

When the author wanted to check the price of tomatoes at nearby supermarkets before going out for grocery shopping, opening the PriceGrabber app and searching for tomatoes automatically displayed prices from the nearest supermarkets. Here, the author discovered a thoughtful feature of PriceGrabber, namely “auto-select all stores.” Sometimes, when our routine involves shopping at a specific supermarket on the way home from work, we can choose our preferred branch as the main store without auto selection based on our location. The system will then prioritize displaying prices from the main store in future product queries.

In contrast, Grocer requires users to manually select the stores for comparison upon entering the app. Unfortunately, it does not support automatic selection of nearby stores based on location, which can be inconvenient. Only after selecting the desired stores for comparison can users access the search page to view price information. Furthermore, Grocer currently lacks features such as merchant page links and historical price comparisons. Therefore, from an operational experience perspective, PriceGrabber holds a distinct advantage.

Functionality

Based on the author’s user experience, significant differences in functionality were observed among the three software applications. The table below illustrates these distinctions:

In summary, PriceGrabber emerges as the superior choice among the three applications, excelling across all the mentioned features. Its comprehensive functionality and user-friendly features make it a preferable option for users seeking a robust and versatile price comparison tool.
